What Is Scott’s Law?

Scott's Law, also known as the Move Over law, first came into effect in 2002 when Lt. Scott Gillen of the Chicago Fire Department was killed by an intoxicated driver while assisting at the scene of a crash. In recent years, several state troopers have also lost their lives to violators of Scott's Law.

This law requires drivers to slow down and move over when they find themselves approaching a vehicle with hazard lights flashing. It also increases penalties for drivers who violate traffic laws in construction zones, maintenance zones and other work zones.
